| My recollections of RAF Cosford. I have tried to recall some of the events, and Boy Entrants, who trained with me in the 25th entry at RAF Cosford from June 1955 to December 1956. After I.T.S. we were split up, with Airframe, Engine, Electrical, Instruments and Armourer Trades Groups going to RAF St. Athan. Any 25th from these trades are welcome to send me material which I will post on the Web Site ! |
Induction Boys aged 15 to 16 years old travelled to RAF Cosford from all over the British Isles, coming from Cities, Towns, and Villages. Everyones background was different, I've listed mine in the following article. I travelled up to RAF Cosford from a small Suffolk village, where I attended a Secondary Modern School. The fortunate thing about the school was that my senior year master ran the local ATC branch. He allowed me to do 2 extra months after my normal leaving age, which brought my maths up to a reasonable standard. The ATC enabled me to pass the basic and technical proficiency exams, as well as attending a summer camp at RAF Upwood. Therefore my knowledge of aircraft and the RAF was fairly good! Memories of my induction exams are a little bit vague now, but I do remember doing rather well in maths, so my extra school time paid off. The medical gave me some concern, the medics seemed a bit worried about the arches of my feet, I managed to assure the MO that they had given me no problem marching, so I must have been a borderline case. (Haven't had any problem feet-wise to date.) The end result was that I was put into the Air Radar Trade Group, my first choice. Photographs below show 25th passing out from ITS. Top. 1FLT. 1SQDN. Trade and Educational Training Many ex Boy Entrants today owe their skills, and technical abilities, to the grounding that RAF Cosford gave them in the various trade disiplines ! The training and facilities were second to none, with a good basic education thrown in too, giving those, mainly ex-secondary modern schoolboys, confidence to face the future, and attain many qualifications in their latter years. |
